In an effort to support states as they work to help local education agencies increase the participation and completion of students in nontraditional career and technical education programs, the NAPE Education Foundation, in partnership with Career Communications, Inc., developed a Parent Edition of the American Careers Magazine. This edition is focused on nontraditional careers, highlighting nontraditional role models, sharing information about nontraditional careers, wage earning potential, and economic self-sufficiency.

Educating parents about keeping career options open for their sons and daughters and expanding their vision of what those options might be is a proven strategy for increasing the participation of students in nontraditional CTE programs. This professional publication is a great tool for local school districts to use at parent education events, in direct mailing campaigns, back to school nights, CTE open houses, etc... With sections on getting started, exploring careers, and future planning (organized around the 16 career clusters and pathways) as well as a 9th -16th grade career planner applicable to high school and community college populations, American Careers Magazine, Parent's Edition communicates a wide variety of information on nontraditional careers in a parent-ready format. Additionally, every page of American Careers Magazine is useful content-no distracting advertisements.

Over 250,000 copies of the inaugural issue of this publication were sold in the Fall of 2006. In response to the overwhelmingly positive feedback from state and local education agencies regarding the impact of the magazine developed a Fall 2007 edition. NAPE's Executive Director's note to parents opens the magazine.

The Fall 2009 version is out as of September 2009. Again this edition highlights nontraditional careers and is loaded with good information for parents and students about nontraditional career opportunities and tips for career exploration.
